BARRY SHEENE - A DAY AT THE SEASIDE
Andy first encountered Barry Sheene, and motorcycle racing in the TV documentary Daytona 75 which told the story of Sheenes infamous crash and recovery. The speed, sound, colour, and all out action of the sport entranced Andy and he subsequently began channeling his artistic endeavours into all things racing!
Then in 1976, Sheenes first world championship winning year, Andy attended the Gold Cup event at Olivers Mount and was amazed by how close he could be as a spectator to the on-track action, and has been visiting this unique venue ever since. Always accompanied by his Zenith 35mm camera Andy accumulated a vast archive of photo albums and these have become the inspiration for this collection of paintings celebrating Sheenes exploits at Olivers Mount.
This collection of A1 size paintings is created using acrylic paint on foam board .....why foam board ?
Well I found that the board distorts and bends slightly when drying from the paint and gives the feel of old printed photographs back from the developers. The paintings are displayed on matt black board to represent the traditional black pages of my old photo albums, and mounted using mock photo corners to complete the retro album feel. The paintings style and content along with the framing/mounting take the viewer back to a golden age of racing and hopefully stirs the emotions of being in the moment experiencing the sound, smell, speed, and all out excitement of Sheene racing at Olivers Mount.
